1. The Britannia
If you’re looking for a pub steeped in history, then check out the Britannia which has been proudly looking after their guests since 1834. Tucked away just off Kensington High Street at No.1 Allen Street, it’s a little hidden gem. You can relax in the cosy bar area on the comfy leather armchairs or enjoy some traditional fresh British classics in the dining room. Their Head Chef, Marcin, uses fresh seasonal ingredients and local produce to create their delicious menus.
They’re open from lunch through to dinner, every day of the week. On Sundays, they serve up a selection of roast dinners but they also have vegan dishes to sink your teeth into. You are fully encouraged to make yourself at home at this buzzing establishment.
2. The Churchill Arms
The Churchill Arms was first built in 1750 and in the 1800s, Winston Churchill’s grandparents became regulars which eventually led to the naming of the pub after World War 2. Not only does it pay homage to Churchill, but the pub is extremely distinctive due to the beautiful flower displays outside.
The Churchill Arms is also the first pub in London to serve Thai food alongside their ales. For 25 years, their highly skilled chefs have been wowing guests with their authentic regional dishes. Whether you like mild or hot and spicy, they’ve got it all covered here. A little slice of Thailand in Kensington. This is one watering hole you must add to your list.
3. The Duke of Clarence
Food is at the heart of what The Duke of Clarence offer. You can enjoy a long brunch, or maybe try one of their superb Sunday roasts. This is a gastropub so it’s something a little bit special when it comes to the food.
Whatever your fancy, whatever time of day, you’ll find something tempting on their new summer menu. The pub is located in the heart of South Kensington so you won’t have far to walk from The Harrington.
4. The Builders Arms
This pub is at the very heart of Kensington and the location offers the perfect spot to rest your weary legs after a day of exploration. This fine establishment is located a stone’s throw away from London’s iconic Natural History Museum and the Royal Albert Hall.
Dating back to the 1800s, The Builders Arms previously accommodated… well you guessed it, builders. However, the pub has been wonderfully restored retaining many of its original Georgian features. A great place to meet people from all walks of life.
5. The Windsor Castle
Ironically, you don’t need to go all the way to Windsor to say you’ve had a drink at The Windsor Castle. This popular pub in South Kensington dates back to the 1820s, is full of character and gives a nostalgic nod to a bygone era.
They offer an enticing range of flavoursome dishes incorporating classing British ingredients with a creative twist. The interior of this establishment has been lovingly preserved blending Victorian period features and traditional wood-panelling. The pub also offers an inviting courtyard and beer garden. The Windsor Castle holds the spirit of the great British local close to its heart.
6. The Anglesea Arms
A.K.A the perfect pub for a summer tryst. This South Kensington pub has a beer garden that is perfect for those sunny summer days. Better still, if you like your ale, then you’ll love it here. Their range of 6 ever-changing hand-pulled cask ales are adored by the locals.
The pub is located on Selwood Terrace where Charles Dickens once resided at no. 11. It was originally a market garden and nursery which dates back to 1712. In 2019 they were awarded 1 AA Rosette for culinary excellence – a firm favourite for sure.
7. The Scarsdale Tavern
If you’re looking for some secluded serenity in the heart of Kensington, this pub can offer just that. There’s a laid-back relaxed ambience which makes it the perfect spot to chill out and watch the world go by.
The food menu here has something for everyone. Specialities include a slow-roasted half shoulder of lamb and grass-fed ribeye steaks. There are also vegetarian and vegan options on their varied and delicious menus. A little gem of a pub in the heart of Kensington.
